　　Abstract:

　　Scientists are increasingly under pressure to share the findings of their research to the public. More than ever, scientists must have the ability to talk about their science to ordinary people. Why should you communicate your work to nonscientists? What tools are available to facilitate this broader communication? What do scientists need to know before they speak to journalists and reporters? What skills can scientists cultivate to enable communication with nonexperts? These and other questions will be answered in this seminar.

　　Introduction:

　　A. Maureen Rouhi received B.S. and M.S. degrees in agricultural chemistry from the University of the Philippines, Los Ba?os, and a Ph.D. from the University of London. Her career spans independent research and teaching in the Philippines and in Iran, scholarly publishing, journalism, news organization management, and publications business development.

　　Her journalism career began when she joined C&EN in 1994. Her favorite beats were chemical ecology, chemical senses, natural products, organic chemistry, history of chemistry, pharmaceuticals, and fine chemicals. She was C&EN’s deputy editor-in-chief from 2007 to 2012 and took over as editor-in-chief in 2012.

　　In April 2014, she accepted a role that brings her back to her cultural and geographic roots: to lead the establishment of and manage C&EN’s physical presence in Asia. As director for C&EN Asia, Maureen is creating a network of freelance science writers based in Asia, expanding C&EN’s reach in the region, and developing editorial products and services to serve chemists in Asia. In this capacity, Maureen also has been participating in outreach to Asia by ACS Publications to help young scientists prepare for scientific publishing and understand the process.
