报告摘要:In this presentation I will review current advances in the characterization of materials in ambient environments of gases and liquids, with special emphasis on applications to catalysis, electrochemistry and environmental science. I will show how the combination of in situ techniques, including microscopies (STM, AFM and TEM), and spectroscopies (XPS and XAS) are providing a deeper understanding of the structure and adsorbate species during dynamic interaction with the gas and liquid environments. Examples that will be discussed include mode single crystal studies of oxidation, Co and Co-Cu nanoparticles for Fischer-Tropsch synthesis, Pt and Pt alloys for reforming, CO oxidation, NO reduction and Au. Environmental studies include the segregation of ions at the water-air interface.
报告人简介:
Prof. M. Salmeron is the Director of the Materials Science Division at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Adjunct Professor at UC Berkeley Materials Science and Engineering Department. He was the Scientific Director of the Imaging and Manipulation Facility of the Molecular Foundry, the Department of Energy Nanoscience Institute in Berkeley from 2004 to 2008.
Salmeron received his B.A. in Physics from the University of Barcelona, and his Ph.D. from the University Autonoma of Madrid, Spain, in 1975. In 1984 he moved to the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a Divisional Fellow, becoming a Senior Scientist in 1996.
His research focuses on atomic scale structure and properties of surfaces and nanomaterials for applications in electronics, catalysis, tribology and environmental science. He has developed novel instrumentation for studies of surface related phenomena, including High Pressure Scanning Tunneling Microscopy for catalysis studies, Scanning Polarization Force Microscopy for studies of liquid films and Ambient Pressure Photoelectron Spectroscopy for Environmental and Catalysis studies.
He was elected Fellow of the American Physical Society in 1996 and Fellow of the American Vacuum Society in 2003. He received the Outstanding Scientific Accomplishment Award in Materials Chemistry in 1995, and the Outstanding Research Award in 1996 from the U.S. Department of Energy. In 2004 he received the Klaus Halbach Award for the development of innovative instrumentation at the Advanced Light Source. In 2008 he received the Medard Welch Award of the American Vacuum Society and the Langmuir Lectureship Award of the American Chemical Society. In 2012 he received MRS Medal Award.
He has published 439 Journal articles and book chapters with total citations of more than 15200, and h-index of 65.
