Abstract
Mg metal is rich in the earth crust and non-toxic and hydrogen capacity is 7.6 mass %. Because of these reasons, Mg attracts significant attraction for various hydrogen storage/transportation applications.
However, reaction temperature of Mg is above 573 K and reaction rate is not ideal for applications.
French company, McPhy, has developed energy storage unit using Mg-H system with thermal insulation and thermal storage in the vessel. This interesting design will be introduced, which gives us a hint to apply the Mg-H2 system for other applications.
Plenty of research has been done to improve thermodynamic properties or kinetics or both but nobody has succeeded.
This lecture, I would like to introduce some of “successful” results and attempts done by myself.
As the second topic, MgH2 is now used as a raw material to synthesize composite materials. Recently, new synthetic method for MgH2 is invented. The reactivity of that MgH2 looks better than commercially available MgH2. In this lecture, MgH2 prepared using the advanced method will be introduced.
Finally, the direction of R & D of MgH2 will be discussed with audience.
