The seminar will start with a brief review of the history of thin film silicon materials and an introduction on thin film silicon solar cells. Major differences between thin film silicon solar cells and conventional crystal silicon solar cells will be addressed. The main part of the presentation will be the approaches and progress in thin film silicon solar cell efficiency improvement, including the material improvements, device architecture, and light trapping. The efforts and challenges towards large area, high volume solar panel and solar laminates production will also be discussed. The recent challenge from low cost polycrystalline silicon solar panels, which has led most thin film PV companies out of business, will be addressed. Although thin film silicon PV has been experiencing a very difficult time, it is still a viable technology for special applications, especially un-manned aircraft and airship. To achieve the ultimate goal, significant efforts are still needed in the science and technology innovations and engineering improvements.
