Dr. Wenbing Yun is a leading researcher in X-ray imaging, an innovator, a serial entrepreneur, and PI of the proposal. He was responsible for several successful X-ray imaging projects at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, including design, construction, and commissioning of three beam lines at Advanced Photon Source (APS/ANL). From 2000 to July 2013, he was founder, chief technology officer, and president (to 2009) of Xradia, Inc., a private startup company specializing in novel applications of x-ray microfocusing optics and imaging systems for high-resolution nondestructive imaging, materials characterization, and medical and biomedical research. Under his leadership, the company established as a worldwide leader in supplying high performance X-ray microscopes, grown rapidly and profitably witha revenue of about $45M/year and about 100 people employment in the San Francisco bay area, and was successfully acquired in July 2013 by Carl Zeiss, a world leader in electron and optical microscopy. As a PI and co-PI, he received three prestigious R&D 100 awards for his work on development of x-ray microscopes. He has over 80 publications and co-authored a book chapter. He has forty-five issued and 25 pending provisional patents and 4 pending non-provisional patents, including several on the design of x-ray sources and optics described in this proposed project. At Xradia, Dr. Yunwas PI of six successful SBIR grant proposals(including two that have gone onto successful phase II proposals) and their subsequent commercialization in products.
Post Zeiss’s acquisition of Xradia in July 2013, Dr. Yun started Sigray, Inc. with a mission to develop a new generation of high brightness X-ray sources and new instruments enabled/empowered by the sources.Dr. Yun has a successful record in developing x-ray optics and both laboratory and synchrotron source based x-ray equipment.Dr. Yun is very excited about the capabilities of the high brightness x-ray illumination system to be developed in this project, and believes it has strong commercialization potential in the biomedical, materials science, and semiconductor fields. As the PI of the project, he will personally oversee all aspects of the proposed research, manage all the external services, and get involved with hands-on work when needed to make this project a success.
